Roller derby

I did something really really fun yesterday! I went to my first ever roller derby practice!

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups (“jams”) in which both teams designate a scoring player (the “jammer”) who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer whilst hindering the opposing jammer — in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.

I saw an article in the newspaper about a group of girls starting up a local team and were looking for more people to join them. I’ve never tried roller skates or inlines or anything like that in my entire life, but it just sounded really cool – and the article did say you didn’t need any previous experience as they’re all new players, so I went to their practice yesterday and IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!! :yay:

The roller skates were kinda scary at first and my knees were wobbling like crazy, but after a few laps it started to feel better. I didn’t fall once! Ok, I wasn’t going that fast but still…
The other scary part was how my social anxiety flared up at the thought of being in a room full of strangers doing something I’ve never done before. Ugh. I’m actually very proud of myself for that, that I actually went through with it. The girls really seem like a nice gang though so it was ok. I think I’ll like them. :)

Tomorrow there’s another practice and I’m definitely going!

How cool! Roller derby looks like a fun but tough sport :) I’ve tried roller blades before, and I was awful in them. I gave up before I properly learned how to use them, and I still kind of regret that, haha. I’m glad you’re having a lot of fun with it!

I want to give you mad props for reading about the group in a newspaper and just going to practice. I don’t think I would have done that. I hope you stick with it, because it sounds like you’re having a lot of fun. Any idea of what position you’ll play?

Well, they did say in the article that they were all completely new at this and you didn’t need any previous experience to join them. Also, my boyfriend wouldn’t stop nagging me to go so it’s just as much his fault. :P I have no idea what position I’ll be, but probably a blocker.
