A year in our new house

It has now been a little over a year since we moved into our new house! The last time we moved (in 2012, we really don’t move around a lot haha) I did a project where I photographed the house every month for the first year. I thought it was fun so wanted to do the same again.

August 2021

We got the keys on 2nd August and had all our things moved a few days later. Since the house is 30 min outside of town we decided to hire a moving company rather than rent a trailer and do it ourselves. BEST decision ever! The whole ordeal was done and over within a few hours. Well worth the money if you ask me.

September 2021

Nice photo, but the autumn colours look better from the other angle. There’s a row of aspen trees along the driveway and they turn such a gorgeous vivid yellow!

October 2021

Appropriate to take a photo in the dark for spooky season. πŸŽƒ Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any trick-or-treaters in this village. Oh well, more candy for us!

This was taken on the 15th when we had the first proper snowfall.

November 2021

More snow now. And Runa acting as gatepost.

December 2021

We had basically no outdoor lights this first Christmas. You can’t tell from this photo, but our neighbours in the yellow house have a ridiculous amount of lights. Like, it looks borderline American. Since we used to live in a tiny house with no outside to speak of we only have one(1) small light curtain that I hung on the porch. You could barely see it and it looked pathetic next to our neighbours. πŸ˜‚

Not sure I’m gonna bother with outdoor lights this year. Or maybe I’ll put red spotlights in the facade lighting? Might look festive. Or like we’re vampires… But I’m ok with both. 😁

January 2022

Snow.

February 2022

More snow.

March 2022

Ok, this will be the last snowy month.

April 2022

HA, as if! This is from the 8th of April when we had a massive blizzard. You can’t tell from the photo but our driveway and the road behind me are completely snowed over. Went up to my thigh in some places. Thank the gods for neighbours with tractors. πŸ™

Spring works quickly up there though. Just a little over two weeks later, on the 25th, it looked like this:

May 2022

Spring for real now. 🌱 Made a little fenced-in area in front of the porch so I can keep the door open and let the dog go in and out as she pleases. She doesn’t go anywhere when I’m outside with her, but I wouldn’t trust her to be in the yard alone.

June 2022

The rowan tree (to the right) is blossoming!

July 2022

Apparently I never took a photo of the front of the house this month. πŸ˜… But I did take this one from the opposite angle. This is the view from the porch. The sun was getting low and it was raining and the light got this sort of peachy colour.

We didn’t do a whole lot with the yard this first summer. Got a truckload of topsoil from a neighbour and used that to smoothen the lawn a bit. Planted some wild strawberries along the treeline in the backyard. That’s about it.

Most of our friends who also bought houses recently dived into lots of projects right away, but I’m hesitant to start stuff when I haven’t lived here long. I want to settle in and get a feel for the house and the land before doing anything major. Next year we’ll probably build that carport and/or a shed for bikes and wheelbarrows and such.

It feels weird that we’ve lived here a whole year already. It seems like we moved in yesterday and, at the same time like we’ve lived here forever. Everything’s new and yet I feel right at home. So far I am very happy we moved here. πŸ₯°
