Imaginary Karin - yule goat drawing

Despite the best efforts of pre-medieval evangelists, Scandinavian culture is still full of old pagan traditions. One of them is the Yule Goat, an old Christmas/Yule symbol.

There are many theories where it comes from, but its true origin is lost in history. In some traditions the goat is actually the one bringing presents to children instead of Santa, but I don’t think anyone follows that today. All I know is that it’s very common to have goat decorations up during Christmas, usually goat figures made of straw and wrapped in red ribbons.

And I’m still trying to figure out ProMarkers…

They feel rather unforgiving compared to coloured pencils, the thickness of the tips makes it difficult to be precise and add fine details. I also keep forgetting that I can’t vary the opacity just by changing the pressure on the paper. But at the same time that intensity of the colours is what drew me to ProMarkers in the first place. I just need to keep practising.

Maybe I should try working with bigger drawings? And try some more cartoonish styles,

It’s mid-December!? How did that happen?

In all honesty I can’t wait for this month to be over. I love keeping in touch with the seasons and enjoy celebrating holidays (all holidays really, not just Christmas), but this year I haven’t felt it at all.

Work is even crazier than usual, the family circus is in full swing (holidays tend to do that), and the weather can’t seem to make up its damn mind. Snow? Rain? Hail? Grasshoppers? Every day is a surprise!

I’m afraid I don’t feel very Christmas-y right now… but that doesn’t mean I can’t play along with this month’s Favourite Things! Focusing on something positive is just what I need. 🙂

Imaginary Karin - smithy

I did something new today: I went to the local smithy to try my hand at forging! 😀

Earlier this year Markus took a couple of classes and really liked it. Since then he’s been asking me to come with him to the smithy some time, but until now I’ve always declined. I have a slight phobia of heat and fire, so the thought of being in a closed space surrounded by flames and red hot metal didn’t sound very appealing.

But I also believe that facing your fears is good for you, so this time I came along, and you know what, it was actually fun! I wasn’t even that scared of the flames, and I’m quite proud of myself for that.

First snow 2015

About bloody time! I’ve been waiting for this since mid-October!

As we’re getting closer to the winter solstice the days are getting shorter and shorter. Right now the sun rises around 8:00 and sets around 14:00 here, and soon it will barely rise at all.
I don’t mind the darkness that much as long as there’s snow on the ground, but without snow it get’s real old real quick. Without snow, even with the street lights on it’s so dark outside you can barely see where you’re going.

So I’m praying to every god/goddess I know that the temperature will keep dropping and that it will keep snowing. I’m done with autumn, now I want winter! 🙂

Do you have snow yet where you live?

(Unless, of course, you’re living in the southern hemisphere. Do you guys have full on summer now?)

Despite being the best holiday ever invented, Halloween still isn’t that big of a deal where I live, and most people I know doesn’t really care about it. This year all the people who do care were busy with other things so I didn’t get to celebrate Halloween at all. *Insert sad panda face*

Since I had no party to go to, I ended up visiting my parents instead. Which isn’t a bad thing, it was nice. I’m at least 5 kg heavier now though, haha! What is it with parents and overfeeding? 😉

Anyway, there’s always next year.

And regardless of time of year, there are always horror movies and shows. 😀 I’m a big horror fan so for this month, in honour of Halloween, I’m naming some of my current favourites.

Movies: The Babadook

I stumbled upon this movie while browsing the “supernatural horror” section on Netflix. The title is more than a little silly, but the actual movie is not.

A woman is living alone with her son,
